“The Antarctic seed microbiome of the invasive Poa annua in global context: evidence of multi-origin assembly and environmental filtering”, is the title of the work carried out by our director Dr. Ian Acuña Rodríguez and an international team of collaborators.
This poster was presented at the XII Conference on Open Science of the Scientific Committee of Antarctic Research —SCAR Open Science Conference Held in Oslo, Norway, it invites us to think. Can an invasive plant carry microscopic allies to Antarctica?
Populations from Chile, Colombia, South Africa, Marion Island, Finland, Poland, and Antarctica were studied, allowing for a global perspective in the analysis. .
✅The investigation identified that the invasive species in Antarctica, Poa Annua, carries microorganisms in its seeds.
✅Evidence of multiple origins and environmental contamination was found
✅ The composition of the microorganisms that travel in their seeds could play an important role when Poa annua arrives and establishes itself in new environments, especially in extreme conditions.
